Arrr, mateys! Hong Kong be demandin' respect for their trade offices or ye may end up walkin' the plank!

Hong Kong's leader on Tuesday urged foreign governments to respect its overseas-based trade offices after a staff member in its London branch was charged in Britain for allegedly working for the Chinese city's intelligence service. Chief Executive John Lee demanded an explanation about the prosecution of Bill Yuen, the office manager, and stated that unwarranted allegations against the city’s government are unacceptable.British police alleged that Yuen, along with two others, engaged in activities to assist the Hong Kong intelligence service, under a new national security act. Lee emphasized the office's role in fostering ties and promoting Hong Kong in Britain. The prosecution could strain relations between Britain and China, with Chinese authorities criticizing the charges as "groundless and slanderous." The Chinese Foreign Ministry called for the protection of Chinese nationals in the U.K., denouncing British accusations of spying for China. In a separate incident, British prosecutors charged two men with spying for China in April. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak warned of threats from authoritarian states like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.Hong Kong's return to China in 1997 has been a point of tension between Britain and Beijing, with critics noting the disappearance of promised freedoms. The three men charged were granted bail in a London court, with their next appearance scheduled for May 24.Reports revealed Yuen's background as a former police officer in Hong Kong, with a photo of him and Lee sparking discussions. Lee clarified that his impression of Yuen was solely based on the photo, downplaying any deeper connections.
