Arizona Senate be givin' local and state police the power to nab them illegal border crossers. Aye, shiver me timbers!

2024-05-23

Arrr, them Arizona senators hath given the nod to a law that allows the landlubbers in blue to nab any scallywags sneakin' in from Mexico. Ye best be watchin' yerself if ye plan on crossin' that thar border, lest ye end up in a cell fit for a pirate. Aye, matey!

In the language of a 17th-century pirate, the scallywags of Arizona senators narrowly approved a proposed ballot measure that would give local law enforcement the authority to arrest landlubbers who illegally cross the US-Mexico border into the state. Arrr, the proposal passed by a vote of 16-13, making it a state crime for these scallywags to enter Arizona from Mexico at any location other than a port of entry, allowing the local and state police to apprehend them. Those convicted of this crime could face up to six months in the brig for the first offense and be sent back to their home country after serving their sentence. While it be already a federal crime to make unauthorized entry into the U.S., supporters of this measure believe Arizona should be able to handle the matter since the federal government ain't doing enough to stop the increase in crossings. Opponents be worried this proposal may harm Arizona businesses, burden law enforcement, and lead to racial profiling of both illegal migrants and American citizens. The measure now advances to the Republican-controlled House, where it be decided whether it be put to a vote by Arizona scallywags on the Nov. 5 ballot.
