An overnight fire in an apartment building in a narrow alley in Vietnam's capital claimed the lives of 14 individuals and left six others injured, as reported by state media on Friday. The building, located in central Hanoi, could only be reached through a tight alley measuring just 6.5 feet wide, making it impossible for firetrucks to access the scene. Firefighters managed to control the blaze using hoses after it started around 12:30 a.m., accompanied by explosions, with the fire taking an hour to extinguish.Neighbor Nguyen Thanh Trung recounted being awoken by the explosions and witnessing the chaos, where he and others used a ladder to help people escape through broken windows. The building housed 24 residents, including the owner's family and tenants, with the injured currently stable at Hanoi Transport Hospital. The fire originated in a small courtyard used as a garage for electric bikes, where batteries were charged at night. The alley was sealed off by police, revealing the aftermath of burnt motorbikes, plants, and personal belongings strewn around. Authorities promised compensation of $1,962 to the families of the deceased and $1,177 to the injured. This incident echoes a similar tragedy from last year, where over 50 individuals lost their lives in a Hanoi fire due to the city's narrow lanes obstructing rescue efforts.
