On January 31, 1944, Second Lieutenant James Galliher was flying over Udine, Italy in a B-24 Liberator. His mission was part of the Army Air Force’s strategic bombing campaign over Europe, which had taken a heavy toll on American airmen. As Galliher’s plane dropped bombs on the German airbase at Aviano, they faced intense anti-aircraft fire.Despite hitting their target, the plane was hit and went into a steep dive. Only two men survived by parachuting out. Galliher was not among them, leaving his fate uncertain. His family later found his wartime photo and embarked on a journey to learn more about his story.Uncle James was eventually presumed dead and honored with a Purple Heart posthumously. This Memorial Day, it is vital to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. By sharing their stories with future generations, we ensure that their memory lives on and their service is never forgotten.We must uphold the values for which these brave individuals fought and died, preserving a free and prosperous America. It is our responsibility as citizens to honor and remember those who gave everything for our nation.
