In southwest Louisiana, a new leader has taken the helm of the Lafayette Police Department after the former chief walked the plank. Lafayette Parish Mayor-President Monique Boulet announced that Capt. Paul Trouard will serve as the interim chief while a search for a permanent replacement is underway.Trouard, a seasoned lawman with 27 years under his belt at the Lafayette agency, was appointed assistant chief by the former chief, Judith Estorge, who recently stepped down for personal reasons. The city's first female police chief, Estorge, will stay on with the department. With a record number of homicides in 2023, Trouard faces a daunting task ahead. He plans to tackle the rise in violent crime with targeted enforcement and data analysis to deploy resources effectively. Communication with the community and officers is also a top priority for Trouard.Despite the challenges, Trouard remains optimistic and aims to be a candidate for the permanent chief position. "I think it’d be easier for me to step into the role," Trouard said, "I will work at whatever capacity is desired, whether that's as chief or in another capacity."As the search for a permanent chief begins, Trouard sets sail on the rough seas of law enforcement leadership, ready to steer the Lafayette Police Department towards safer shores.
