School districts nationwide are hiring military veterans as teachers due to teaching shortages. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 86% of public schools faced challenges in hiring teachers last school year. Each state sets its own requirements for veterans to become teachers, usually needing a bachelor's degree and a background check. Veterans who have entered teaching encourage others to do the same, citing transferable skills from their military service. Ryan Pavel, a former Marine Corps member, transitioned into teaching with the help of Teach for America, becoming a 9th grade English teacher in Detroit.Pavel noted that veterans have experience working with diverse groups and accomplishing missions, making them resilient. Many programs, like the Warrior-Scholar Project and ASPIRE to Teach, assist veterans in earning teaching credentials and finding careers. Jessica Bell, a graduate of the ASPIRE to Teach program, now teaches 7th grade literacy in Denver and incorporates mental health education into her curriculum.Bell emphasized that teaching has become her passion and believes veterans with a joy for teaching should pursue the profession.
