A Democratic member of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Katie Porter, accused several in her party of backing out of support for a bipartisan presidential ethics bill after speaking with the White House. She and Rep. James Comer had introduced the Presidential Ethics Reform Act in late May, targeting financial disclosures and other issues related to presidential ethics. Porter claimed that after recruiting bipartisan co-sponsors, the deal fell apart while she was flying back to Washington. The White House was allegedly involved in influencing Democratic lawmakers to withdraw their support for the bill.The ethics bill, introduced by Comer, would require presidents and vice presidents to disclose payments from foreign sources and inter-familial payments exceeding $10,000. It aims to address concerns about corruption and influence peddling in Washington. Despite losing some Democratic co-sponsors, the bill has garnered support from billionaire Mark Cuban. Comer expressed the importance of increasing transparency in financial interactions related to the office of the president and vice president to prevent profiting from political power.
