Arrr! Texas Christian University be offerin' a course on the queer art of drag, me hearties! This course, taught by Nino Testa, who goes by the name Maria von Clapp when in drag, requires students to create their own drag personas and engage with queer theories in relation to performance practice. The class will explore drag performance as an outlet for social critique, pedagogy, and queer worldmaking. In addition, students will meet with drag performers and experts and debut their drag personas at TCU's Annual Night of Drag. The syllabus for the course invokes the gender binary and how it is enforced through compulsory norms and violence in service of a white-cis-heteropatriarchy. Students will read texts such as "The Gender Binary is a Tool of White Supremacy" and "How Drag Villains Became the Far Right’s Ultimate Villains." They will also learn about the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an activist drag queen troupe that caused blowback after being honored at the LA Dodgers' annual pride night celebration. Students will produce a one-to-two-minute solo drag performance to be shared with an open audience at TCU's Annual Night of Drag.
