"Arrr, matey! New York City be payin' a hefty sum o' $50K to send migrants on a jolly ride to Florida, Texas, 'n China!"

2023-06-24

Arrr mateys, word on the high seas be that New York City shelled out o'er $50,000 in loot to relocate 114 migrant families to foreign lands like China and beyond. The scallywags be scatterin' like sand in the wind!

Arrr, mateys! It seems that New York City has spent a pretty penny - $50,000 to be exact - to resettle over a hundred migrant households across the United States and even in countries as far as South America and China. While the existence of transportation programs for migrants out of the city is nothing new, the top three states that received the most rehoused households were Florida, Texas, and North Carolina. Meanwhile, five households were sent to other countries like Peru, China, Ecuador, and Venezuela.

This comes after NYC Mayor Eric Adams and other Democratic leaders have criticized governors of Florida and Texas for their resettlement programs that transport migrants to so-called "sanctuary" jurisdictions like NYC, Washington D.C., and California. The governors have claimed that the transports are voluntary, but critics have accused them of misleading migrants to get them on the transports against their will.

While the controversy taps into the ongoing debate about migrant transportation and the ethics involved, Border states like Texas argue that they need to protect their communities from a historic influx of migrants and believe it justified to send them to jurisdictions that call for policies that they say have encouraged the crisis. As for NYC officials, they have rejected the comparison and said that they are not coercing people to leave nor are they presenting any false choices. They are simply helping people who want to reconnect with loved ones or communities do so.

Regardless, the numbers released by Customs and Border Protection showed that there were over 204,000 migrant encounters at the southern border in May alone, bringing the total encounters for the fiscal year to over 1.6 million. Looks like the debate on migrant transportation will continue to rage on.
