New Hampshire has joined 36 other states in prohibiting state contracts or investments involving companies that boycott Israel and its trade partners.The executive order signed by Governor Chris Sununu has been praised by the Israeli-American Coalition for Action for defending the cultural and commercial ties between Israel and New Hampshire.
However, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has condemned the order, claiming it is an assault on First Amendment rights. CAIR has successfully challenged similar regulations in other states.
CAIR's senior litigation attorney, Gadeir Abbas, stated that the government cannot dictate how Americans spend their money or who they financially support. He argued that boycotts have been a part of American political life since the country's founding.
During the signing, Governor Sununu was joined by Israel's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Gilad Erdan.
