Indian authorities have arrested four individuals in connection with the abduction, rape, and public humiliation of two women in Manipur, India. The incident occurred on May 4, the day after deadly ethnic clashes broke out in the state. The two women were part of a family that was attacked by a mob, resulting in the death of two male members. A video of the assault, which showed the two naked women being surrounded and groped by a group of men, went viral and triggered widespread outrage.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the assault and promised that the guilty would not be spared. He called the incident "unforgivable" and urged state governments to ensure the safety of women. Modi's statement came amidst a backdrop of near-civil war in Manipur, where ethnic violence has resulted in the deaths of over 130 people since May.

The conflict in Manipur began with an affirmative action controversy between the Christian Kukis and the mostly Hindu Meiteis. The clashes have persisted despite the presence of the army in the state, with armed militias forming and isolated villages being raked with gunfire. Over 60,000 people have been displaced and are living in relief camps.

The women who were assaulted belong to the Kuki-Zo community and were targeted by a Meitei mob. They were forced to remove their clothes, verbally and physically abused, and sexually assaulted. The two women are now safe in a refugee camp.

Last week, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for action to stop the violence in Manipur and protect religious minorities. India's foreign ministry criticized the resolution as interference in its internal affairs.
