A new lawsuit has been filed in Wisconsin by a national Democratic law firm, the Elias Law Group, seeking to allow voters to return absentee ballots in drop boxes. This practice was previously barred by the state Supreme Court following criticism from former President Donald Trump. The lawsuit comes just before the Wisconsin Supreme Court is expected to flip from a conservative to a liberal majority. Given Wisconsin's status as a battleground state, voting rules in the state are of particular interest. Four out of the past six presidential elections in Wisconsin have been decided by less than a percentage point. The conservative majority of the Wisconsin Supreme Court banned the use of drop boxes in 2022, stating that the Wisconsin Elections Commission did not have the authority to allow them. The court limited drop boxes to election clerks' offices only. Supporters of drop boxes argue that they are a more secure option than mailing ballots. The lawsuit also aims to undo the requirement of a witness signature on absentee ballots and the deadline for correcting any issues with absentee ballots. The lawsuit was filed by two liberal-leaning organizations, Priorities USA and the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans, as well as a Dane County resident. The case may eventually make its way to the state Supreme Court, which will soon have a liberal majority. The Wisconsin Elections Commission and the state Department of Justice declined to comment on the lawsuit.
