In a report released on Friday, doctors in Kenya have stated that the bullet wounds sustained by civilians during opposition protests last month indicate that most of them were shot while trying to flee from the police or surrender. The report, conducted by the Kenya Medical Association, Amnesty International Kenya, and the Law Society of Kenya, focused on protests in the counties of Kisumu and Kisii, which are strongholds of the opposition. It confirmed that at least 11 people were killed, with most of them being shot dead, and identified 47 others with gunshot wounds.
The report highlighted the use of excessive force by the police during the protests against the rising cost of living, noting that some victims were innocent bystanders, including a woman who was shot in the chest while watching the demonstrations from her shop. These findings come shortly after the Kenyan government expressed interest in leading a multinational force in Haiti to combat gang violence, with the United States seeking to authorize the force through a resolution as the current president of the United Nations Security Council.
Human rights groups have long accused the Kenyan police of abuses, and these concerns were reiterated during the recent demonstrations. Another watchdog confirmed that at least 35 people were killed during the protests. The report is based on interviews and visits with survivors and witnesses. It also raised concerns about the tampering of evidence by the police and the denial of access to victims' families to view or photograph the bullets extracted from their loved ones' bodies.
The report calls for immediate investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, a government-created organization. While the police spokeswoman did not comment on the allegations, the spokesman for the interior ministry stated that they were waiting for a request from the report's authors for a formal response.
