On August 26, 2021, a suicide bomber from ISIS-K attacked Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan, killing 13 American service members. The Biden administration has denied responsibility and claimed that the attack was unpreventable. However, evidence presented in a new book contradicts this narrative. The suicide bomber, Abdul Rahman al-Logari, was a known ISIS-K operative who had been imprisoned at Bagram Air Base. The Taliban freed Logari after they overran the base following President Biden's decision to abandon it against military advice. If Biden had listened to the military leaders, Logari would still be in prison.Furthermore, Pentagon investigators discovered that the military and intelligence community were tracking ISIS-K cells connected to the bombing before the attack. They had multiple opportunities to conduct a preemptive strike against these operatives but were prevented from doing so due to a negative response from the Taliban. The military had identified the location of an ISIS-K operative involved in the Abbey Gate attack but declined to strike the location days before the bombing to avoid angering the Taliban.
Testimonies from officers and a Marine sergeant support these findings. They were aware of the impending attack, had actionable intelligence, and even had a description of the suspected bomber. However, when they requested permission to shoot, their battalion commander claimed he didn't have "engagement authority." The suspected bomber disappeared into the crowd, and the attack occurred shortly after.
The White House has not addressed these facts and has failed to publicly identify Logari as the bomber or discuss the intelligence it received before the attack. The Biden administration wants to move on without accountability, but the Gold Star Families and the American public deserve the truth.
