2023-09-04
Arrr! On the 4th o' September, 2023, South Sudan's cap'n had a meetin' with Sudan's mighty naval commander. South Sudan, after a fierce battle, cut loose from Sudan in 2011. They be sailin' their own ship now, mateys!
Sudan's top military general, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, visited South Sudan's capital, Juba, for talks with President Salva Kiir. The discussions aimed to find a regional solution to the conflict in Sudan. The war in Sudan began earlier this year when tensions between the military led by Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces commanded by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo erupted into open fighting. This has turned Khartoum into an urban battlefield, with neither side gaining control of the city. In addition to the conflict in Khartoum, the western Darfur region has experienced ethnic violence, as Arab militias attack ethnic African groups. Burhan's delegation included acting Foreign Minister Ali al-Sadiq and Gen. Ahmed Ibrahim Mufadel, among others. South Sudan's Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Martin Elia Lomuro, expressed confidence in President Kiir's ability to resolve the crisis. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 and has previously attempted to mediate between the warring factions. The conflict has resulted in the displacement of millions of people, both internally and across borders. The United Nations and other humanitarian agencies have appealed for $1 billion to provide assistance to those affected by the war. The UNHCR has reported preventable deaths, particularly among children, due to a lack of sufficient resources. This visit to Juba is Burhan's second trip abroad since the war began.
