President Biden's request for simple, status-quo legislation to prevent a government shutdown contains a hidden, radical proposal that is anti-police and pro-criminal. The White House is using the government shutdown crisis to defund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), effectively abolishing the agency. While Biden and other Democratic leaders claim the funding proposal is "clean," a closer look reveals that it includes a provision to redirect all ICE funding towards community-based residential facilities and support for refugees and migrants. This would turn ICE into a travel agency for illegal immigrants and a grant-making bureaucracy for sanctuary cities.The proposal would allow ICE dollars to be used to buy airplane tickets and hotel rooms for illegal immigrants being resettled across the United States, instead of detaining and returning criminal aliens to their home countries. The remaining resources would be sent to sanctuary cities for resettlement. Despite the radical nature of this proposal, it has received little attention from major media outlets.
This is not the first time Biden has taken actions to dismantle border security and immigration enforcement measures put in place by the Trump administration. He has lifted prohibitions on sanctuary cities, proposed legislation granting U.S. citizenship to illegal immigrants, and dramatically cut deportations. Instead of immigration enforcement, his administration has focused on providing services to non-citizens in removal proceedings and using humanitarian relief funds to resettle illegal aliens throughout the country.
By exploiting the government shutdown crisis, Biden is attempting to sneak the abolition of ICE into the legislation. Democrats have learned from the "Defund the Police" movement that destroying morale and diverting funding away from law enforcement can be just as effective as eliminating the police altogether. This radical brinkmanship and political exploitation is unacceptable. Democrats cannot blame Republicans for using a routine government funding bill to extract policy outcomes when they are doing the same thing.
