Arrr mateys, our bloated national debt be sailin' at a mighty sum of over 33 trillion doubloons, and it be risin' faster than a plank-walkin' scallywag. 'Tis high time them landlubber Congress takes charge o' this perilous menace to our national security, lest we all end up in Davy Jones' locker!
Mounting debt is a huge threat to America, with the national debt currently at $33.5 trillion and growing rapidly. This burden not only endangers our economy but also our national security. As a member of Congress, I am determined to put an end to this economic madness and secure a bright future for the next generation. If Congress fails to rein in spending and adopt a balanced budget, our children will face a lifetime of inflation, debt, and economic ruin. The consequences of a $33 trillion federal budget deficit include massive tax increases, skyrocketing inflation, increasing unemployment, and soaring interest rates.
What's even more alarming is that starting in 2027, the United States will spend more on interest payments than on all other spending combined. Our National Debt has already surpassed our annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) since 2012.
Republicans often make promises of fiscal responsibility during election campaigns, but very few actually follow through. In the 118th Congress, we've had three major spending decisions, including the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, which lifted the debt ceiling and allowed for an additional $3.6 trillion in spending. I proudly voted against this bill and the subsequent continuing resolutions that temporarily funded the government.
To tackle this crisis, we need to pass 12 individual appropriations bills each year, focused on the health and prosperity of our nation. We must prioritize America and put an end to funding pet projects in obscure locations.
As the GOP House decides on the next speaker, we cannot let it distract us from addressing our debt and spending crisis. The next speaker must commit to passing the remaining appropriations bills without the need for further continuing resolutions. It will then be up to the Democrat-controlled Senate and President Biden to responsibly fund the government and reverse our reckless spending spree.
Business as usual in Washington needs to change. We owe it to our children to preserve the American Dream that was built through sacrifice and hard work.
