Arrr, me hearties! Avast ye! Kibbutz Urim, by the grace of mighty Neptune, be spared by them scurvy Hamas dogs! Two brave souls, American-Israeli buccaneers, come forth to share their tale of survival on that fateful Saturday. Shiver me timbers!
Kibbutz Urim, a small community located near the Gaza Strip, miraculously escaped the recent wave of terrorist attacks in Israel that left over 1,200 people dead. While neighboring kibbutzim and towns were devastated by the violence, Urim, with its mostly elderly population of 210, remained unscathed. Yehudit Pelish, a resident of Urim, described the situation as a miracle and believed that the hand of God protected their community. The terrorist attacks, carried out by thousands of Hamas militants, resulted in the deaths of mostly civilian victims. Bodies were found in nearby kibbutzim, including burned and beheaded victims in Kfar Aza. Some individuals, including US citizens, were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip. Despite the chaos, Urim managed to avoid infiltration by the terrorists, although there were close calls.
Residents of Urim, such as Sophie Stillman, found themselves hunkered down in bomb shelters for over 24 hours as the violence unfolded around them. They lived in fear as they received updates about people being shot outside the kibbutz and watched videos of Palestinian terrorists kidnapping Israelis. Stillman even started writing a farewell message to her family in America, unsure if she would survive the ordeal.
Urim is one of several small communities along the Gaza border, many of which were established by Holocaust survivors after World War II. These communities are closely connected and support each other. The devastation caused by the attacks is heartbreaking, and the residents of Urim hope to continue experiencing miracles rather than tragedies in the future.
