2023-10-15

Arr, mateys! Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis be standin' firm, he be! He be sayin' that the land o' the brave shouldn't be takin' no refugees from Gaza, 'cause that scurvy dog, Hamas, be spreadin' a toxic culture. Avast, he be stickin' to his guns, he be!

Florida Governor and GOP presidential hopeful, Ron DeSantis, reiterated his belief that the United States should not accept refugees from Gaza amidst the ongoing conflict with Israel. During an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation," DeSantis stated, "Palestinian Arabs should go to Arab countries, the U.S. should not be absorbing any of those." This comes after DeSantis sparked controversy with comments made in Iowa, where he argued that accepting these refugees would contribute to antisemitism.

DeSantis defended his stance, stating that the refugees from Gaza exhibit antisemitic behavior and do not believe in Israel's right to exist. These remarks were made as Israel warned civilians in the Gaza Strip to evacuate ahead of a planned ground invasion by the country's defense forces in response to surprise attacks launched by Hamas.

Former Arkansas Governor and fellow GOP hopeful, Asa Hutchinson, pushed back against DeSantis' categorization of the refugees as antisemitic, emphasizing the danger of labeling an entire group in such a manner. However, DeSantis countered the criticism, claiming that those who disagreed had their "head in the sand" regarding the realities in Gaza.

During his interview on "Face the Nation," DeSantis maintained that Hamas has created a toxic culture in the Gaza Strip, citing their election in 2006 and the indoctrination of hatred towards Jews in textbooks. He argued that importing large numbers of these refugees to the United States would increase both antisemitism and anti-Americanism.

DeSantis's comments have stirred debate within the GOP and have drawn attention to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Whether his stance will impact his presidential campaign remains to be seen, but for now, DeSantis remains firm in his belief that the U.S. should not accept refugees from Gaza.
